Lithuanian Migration Before Independence
Before independence, Lithuania formed part of the Russian Empire after the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Migration during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was influenced by economic hardship, industrialization, political repression, military conscription, and religious discrimination.
